Uni versal Principles of Alignment
Open to grace: Expanding the inner body, softening the outer boundaries, setting the foundation and intention
Muscular energy: Hugging the muscles to the bone, hugging to the midline, and drawing in from the periphery to the focal point
Inner s piral: Internally rotating the legs, thighs, and pelvis
Outer s piral: Externally rotating the legs, thighs, and pelvis
Organic energy: Expanding from bones to skin, extending from the focal point in all directions
Flowing wit h Grace
The word anusara means “to be concurrent with grace” (anu meaning “concurrent,”
and sara meaning “grace”) or “to flow with grace”; the highest
intention of Anusara yoga is to “align with the Divine,” meaning to align
with your true nature and awaken to the inherent goodness eternally present
in yourself and others. By stepping deeper into the currents of grace, moving
into alignment with your own heart, you become more and more yourself.
Indi vidual Spirit
In addition to serving as an acronym for the “integrated science of hatha,
tantra, and ayurveda,” the word ishta also appears in Patanjali’s Yoga
Sutras in a line that translates as “self-study provides the individual with the
path to enlightenment.” Therefore, ishta is taken to mean “individual” and,
when expanded, to mean “that which resonates with the individual spirit” in
this system of yoga.
